Broadway Project Update: Work in the area of Miles Exploratory Learning Center

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility, and the Regional Transportation Authority continue the construction of the Broadway Corridor from Euclid Boulevard to Country Club Road. The following is a response to inquiries of work in the area of Broadway Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

Constructing bus pullouts along the corridor are an important transit element of this improvement project. One bus pullout is on the south side of Broadway, east of Highland Avenue in the area of Miles Exploratory Learning Center, 1400 E. Broadway Boulevard.

The installation of this specific bus pullout necessitated that the City work in coordination with the property owner, the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). A formal agreement was completed between TUSD and the City of Tucson prior to the start of construction of the Broadway Project.

TUSD and the team worked together to minimize the impacts to the property and ensure the best process to re-align and reconnect a portion of fencing that is impacted as part of this work. The City of Tucson purchased the necessary property and temporary construction easement and has agreed to how the fence should be properly re-aligned and re-installed. This fence re-alignment/relocation is in the final roadway design plans presented to the public and to the Citizen Task Force.

On May 14, 2020 the City’s contractor, Ashton Construction, began the process of installing new fence post(s) as part of the fence re-alignment. Approximately 30 linear feet of the fence along the northwest corner of the school grounds adjacent to and parallel with Broadway will be set back and re-aligned to be 'notched' in around the new Right-of-Way. The re-aligned setback is approximately 5' from existing fencing on the east end of the 'notch' and 7' on the west end. The Contractor has indicated this work is expected to be completed by the end of next week (5/22/20).
